Airside safety

Course overview

On the apron, each company is responsible for its own staff, but the risks come from co-activity. Turnaround safety therefore depends on organisation: coordination between companies, clear roles, supervision and lessons learned.

The course gives managers the methods and tools to assess turnaround risks, organise a safe turnaround and manage safety performance. It is based on the ACI Airside Safety Handbook, INRS guidance on co-activity, Regulation (EU) 2025/20 and IATA AHM 1110, and includes a co-activity risk assessment grid.

  • Know who works under and around the aircraft and the risks each party creates for the others.
  • Assess the co-activity risks of a turnaround and select appropriate preventive measures.
  • Organise and coordinate aircraft arrival, turnaround and departure with the other companies.
  • Manage safety performance: reporting, lessons learned, indicators, audits, competence and safety promotion.

Why airside safety training for managers?

Occupational health and safety rules require a joint risk analysis and a prevention plan when several companies work on the same site. On the apron, the turnaround manager is at the heart of this coordination.

Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/20 creates a European framework for ground handling service providers: safety management system, training programme and occurrence reporting, from 27 March 2028. This course helps managers prepare for it.

FAQ – Airside Safety – Manager level

Why a specific course for managers?

Because turnaround safety depends on organisation: coordination between companies, prevention plans, supervision and lessons learned. The course gives managers the methods and tools to do this.

What does Regulation (EU) 2025/20 change?

From 27 March 2028 it requires ground handling service providers to declare their activity to the authority, run a safety management system, provide initial and recurrent training (ORGH.TRG.100) and report occurrences.

How long does the course take?

About 7 hours, at your own pace. Each module takes 45 minutes to 1 hour including the quiz.

How is the certificate issued?

As soon as you pass the final exam (20 questions, 80% correct answers), your personal certificate can be downloaded as a PDF.

How long is the certificate valid?

3-year validity: maximum recurrent training interval of 36 months set by Regulation (EU) 2025/20 (ORGH.TRG.100), applicable from 27 March 2028, and already recommended by IATA AHM 1110. Your employer’s or the airline’s requirements may be stricter.

What is the difference with the Operational level?

The Operational level trains apron staff in safe working practices. The Manager level trains those who organise the turnaround and manage safety.
